Learn some tips and tricks of basic napkin folding, and turn flat table linen into creative miniature works of art with these napkin folding ideas.

The Fan: The fan fold is one of the simplest napkin folding techniques to learn. First, fold the cloth dinner napkin in half, with the fold at the top. Begin at the left side and pleat the napkin like an accordion, folding over and then under repeatedly. Stop when there is of the napkin left to fold. Vertically flip the napkin over and fold the top down to the bottom. Turn the right bottom corner of the napkin up so that edge lines up with the pleated napkin edge. Pull the overlapping piece underneath it all. Then you can open the napkin gently and stand it up on a dinner plate.

Wine Glass Fold: This fold results in a table linen blossom resting in a wine glass. Set the cloth dinner napkin in a diamond shape and fold the bottom point to the top point. Fold the bottom left and bottom right points so they meet the top point. The napkin should look like a miniature diamond. Turn the napkin over from left to right. Horizontally fold the napkin in half again. Pinch the bottom of the fold and place the napkin into the glass. Gently tug the right and left ends of the napkin out and down, while carefully holding the middle part in place.

Silverware Holder: Create a clever place to hold the silverware, a flower or chopsticks with this easy napkin folding idea. Fold a linen napkin in half, then in half again to make a small square. The folded side should face you. Turn down the top layer of material from the top left corner down to the bottom right corner. Turn the napkin over and fold the right side, then the left side, of the way towards the middle. The bottom parts should then be tucked together. When you turn the napkin back over, you’ll see a little pocket where you can place a variety of items.

When you pay attention to every detail, you increase the chances of a successful party. Setting an attractive table is one way to give guests an aesthetically pleasing experience and creates an atmosphere of elegance and charm.

I’ll just say it: I hate text messaging. It takes me forever to find the right letters on my phone and I don’t like switching screens just to insert a semicolon. It costs 10?per message, which seems ridiculously wasteful, and it makes my thumbs hurt (although you can add this service to your cell phone plan for a minimum monthly fee).

In case you hadn’t guessed, I’m “old” (i.e., older than 20), and chances are, if you’re reading this, you are too. You may have noticed how communication preferences are the greatest indicator of generational differences these days. “Really old” people (over 40) still use telephones and voice mail and are soundly mocked by those in their 30’s who rely on email and IM (Instant Messaging). (Let’s not even talk about those fossils who still-gasp!-write letters by hand.) However, for those 25 and under, text messaging is unquestionably the preferred method of communication.

According to a 2005 study by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 45% of teens have cell phones and of those, 64% regularly send text messages from them.[1] Sixty percent of teens listed text messaging as their primary form of communication with their peers, second in popularity only to cell phones.[2] Teens also named Instant Messages and social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Friendster as preferred communication methods. The least popular? Face-to-face communication and email at 35% and 22%, respectively. Joel Kades, VP of Strategic Planning and Consumer Insight for Virgin Mobile USA calls texting “the folded-up note of this time period”. [3]

What does this mean for parents? For those who feel like I do, it unfortunately means you should start doing thumb exercises. For as long as there have been parents and children, there has been a struggle between communication and privacy. Relationship experts have long recommending using notes as a way to communicate with your children while still allowing them a bit of mental and emotional space.

It might feel strange to send your kids a text message when they are sitting in the next room, but what if you’re working late again this week, or they’re at the mall as usual? Busy families often connect more frequently if they can do so electronically. Either way, you might be pleased by the results.

Messages can be small (“I’m getting a snack. Want one too?”). Or they can be thoughts that you might forget to share with them otherwise (“I really like your hair like that”). It can be a great way to tell them something that might otherwise embarrass them (“I was watching you fold laundry today, and remembered how much helped me fold socks when you were a baby”) or a way to quickly set up a “real” discussion (“Family meeting tonight? Let’s talk allowance.”). Even a well-timed “LOL” (“laugh out loud”) can let your child know you’re listening. You can also send a text message to remind your child about a task they need to do or let them know you’ll be home late. The options are endless.

Communicating non-verbally with your child allows some valuable things that speaking doesn’t. First, privacy. Your children can read messages own their own turf, without looking you in the eye, affording them more control over their emotions and thoughts. Second, you can both think things through so your messages are accurate-and can be re-read later when you’re no longer mad. Third, text messages can be kept on the phone or sent to an email address to be looked at again and again. You might be surprised at how much your child might treasure a compliment or kind word. Best of all, text messages or instant messages are quick and don’t even require a response, making communication feel intimate and easy, rather than being a big production, and helping your child to see you in a different light.

This is great, you say, I’m on board, I’m ready to start texting and IMing my kids. Now what? Well, first you need to learn how. For IM, you’ll need to set up an account (free) with one of the chat services (AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, ICQ, etc.). You’ll likely want to use the service your child uses. Chat clients like Trillian or Macintosh’s iChat allow you to have several accounts with different services and be logged into them all simultaneously. To text your child, you both need to have cell phones with a messaging feature (most recent phones do automatically). Compose messages using the numeric keypad on your phone, pressing the number that corresponds to the letter. For example, if you’re trying to type “E”, you’d hit the number 3 twice in succession. Keep in mind, that unless you’re enrolled in an unlimited text program as part of your wireless package, you will be charged for each message sent or received.

As you know, IMs and text messaging has its own slang and shorthand. To save your thumbs, and understand what your child is saying to you, you may want to consult a glossary like GuardChild’s Instant Messaging/Chat/Text Messaging/Emoticon Glossary at http://www.GuardChild.com. If all else fails, ask your kids for help. Assuming they don’t die of embarrassment, it’s a great way to start a conversation.

Do you know what kids want for Christmas this year? Yes, I said it, “Christmas”! It is on it’s way and will be here before you know it. Why am I talking about it at the end of September? Because it is only 3 months away. Because if you have kids, you know the horrible feeling you get when you come to the realization that you procrastinated too long and now you will never find that hot, popular toy. You find yourself asking your kids about the toy they want second best. I have done it and I doubt I am the only one. I have also found myself out late on Christmas Eve hoping to find the one toy they wanted most. Never again! Here are some of the ways I have found to make sure that my kids will get what they want for Christmas this year.

Give them the Toys R Us flyer that we all receive in our mailboxes or in our newspapers. Have them circle what they want. Allow 3 things and have them number them. Make sure they know that there is no guarantee, but you are just looking for ideas. If you allow them to circle whatever they want, you will see a toy book with almost everything circled. Giving limitations will force your kids to really think about what they want.

On Saturday, when all of the cartoons are interrupted repeatedly for commercials, have your kids pick one to show you. No more than one. Remember, we are just getting ideas so that you can put all of the information together and get your child the gift or gifts that you think they really would enjoy the most.

Now, plan to buy the hottest toy early. If it is on a list of some sort as a hot toy, get it very early. Then, you can rest easy knowing you have the big, most important gift safely in hand.

If you are shopping online, look for free shipping or a great deal on shipping. Many companies are fighting for your business and you will find some awesome shipping deals that may save you the hassle of battling the toy aisle. You are also much more likely to find the color or exact style you want online.

If you like to get out there and actually have the gift in hand, you can save yourself some gas by going online first. Visit the websites of some of the local, larger stores. Most of them offer a service online that allows you enter the toy and the details (color, size, etc.) and it will tell you whether or not it is in stock at that particular store. If not, a lot of the stores’ websites will give you information about which of their nearby stores have the item. I used this a lot last year and it was wonderful!

Plan to have the toys you need in hand before Thanksgiving. That will greatly reduce your stress. If your child changes the toy they want, don’t worry. Most younger children quickly forget which toy they were demanding at the time when they see a toy they want right in front of them.

Be a cool aunt, grandma, mom or dad and start planning now. You want to be sure you get what kids want for Christmas. And when your friends are all out doing their last-minute shopping in a panic, you can sit at home on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa and some Christmas cookies. Doesn’t that sound nice?

Your belly looks round like a basketball, so you must be having a boy. Yes, you haven’t gained weight anywhere but your belly, which means it’s a boy. Your belly sticks out really far, and that means you’re going to have a girl. Girls take away all your beauty, and you’re not looking too hot. There must be a girl inside there.

Those are just a few of the plethora of statements I heard while I was pregnant. My husband and I decided to not find out what we were having. But after being subjected to all of those strange wives’ tales for nine months straight, I would have gladly rewound time to know what a sonographer could have told me regarding our baby’s gender.

According to OB-GYN Natan Haratz-Rubinstein on the BabyCenter Web site, by 18 to 20 weeks, your practitioner or technician may be able to identify your baby’s gender during an ultrasound, if your baby sits still. In addition, he or she has to be in a position that allows the technician to see the baby’s genitals. Then even if the technician gets a good view of the baby’s genital area, the image may be blurry.

According to Haratz-Rubinstein, “the more experienced the sonographer and the higher the quality of the sonogram machine, the more likely you are to get an accurate assessment. But even the best sonographers can’t usually guarantee whether it’s a girl or a boy.”

Some expecting parents opt to wait to find out their baby’s sex. And understandably so. Many a family have purchased a crib, girlie bedding, pink bassinet, dresses, frilly panties, dolls, hair bows, everything they could possibly want for the little girl they were promised. Then comes labor, and it’s a boy!

But other parents decide to find out their child’s gender so that they can be prepared, also an understandable decision. If a technician is 99 percent sure of the baby’s sex, then purchasing all the necessities and perhaps some extras can bring great joy and increased anticipation.

By the way, I had a girl.

Whether gardening purely for pleasure, competition, or to provide food for the family; there will be times when the insect population of your plot may get a little out of hand. At these times of infestation it is all to easy to turn to commercial, chemical sprays and poisons.

However many of these commercial products are indiscriminate. Killing good as well as bad insects. Also, they can cause health problems to the person spraying them, or anyone else who comes into contact with them. They are a problem to find safe storage for in the home and they’re expensive.

If you do not like labels listing poisons, toxins and warnings its time to make your own insecticides. There are endless products you can make yourself but the basic item, no gardener should be without is a Homemade Soap DeBug Spray.

You will need:

A plant spray bottle.

Water.

Liquid or soft soap.

Simply mix one part soft soap with 100 parts water, shake well and spray on affected plants. The soap will smother insects making it difficult for them to respire or feed. As a bonus the soap will also make the foliage unappetising, so discouraging other pests moving onto the plant. This spray is particularly effective against aphids, the most common insect pest in many gardens. The spray action dislodges many from their plant hideaway too. In fact simply squirting aphids with water will have some affect, though not as long-lasting as using a soap spray.

You may have heard an old-fashioned method of throwing the dirty washing-up water over plants in the garden. This is based on the same principle (soaps smothering and dislodging insects while making plants unattractive to eat). However, most modern washing up liquids are now strong detergents containing anti-bacterial compounds. This approach will work now and again but repeated use of detergents may damage healthy plants so is not recommended as a regular application.

If you would like to make your own soft soap, simply grate a bar of Marseille (or other vegetable based) soap into around four litres of water. Simmer for ten minutes then decant. This is a great all round mild detergent to be used through the home, particularly in the laundry.

There are alternative sprays you can make easily at home to target particular pests but Soap DeBug Spray should be your first and most widely used. It is very economical, effective and environmentally sound.

An international classic game invented by Ephraim Hertzano, a Romanian migrant to the state of Israel over seven decades ago, it has earned unparalleled popularity for being a mind boggling game that engages all the entire thinking faculties of the individual with an amazing blend of passion to provide a relaxing comfort to the player. Unlike most of the now forgotten games that have appeared from the market with the speed with which they came in, Rummikub has proven to have an enduring legacy of excellence with deep historical roots.

Its design, structure and playing system are simply an unbeatable package that captures the imagination and sustains the interest of all players.

What is Rummikub and how is it played? To begin with, lets get the details right! The game shares some basic similarities with the conventional cards game, but prominently is the usage of the joker. Every game set of Rummikub is made of special tiles of various colors such as red, blue, black and orange, set on a playing rack. The original game has undergone several touches of innovation to reflect variety in consumer taste and style, this has taken place against the backdrop of the fact that the Israeli and American game continue to remain the most popularly used variants. On the market today, one can spot the new varieties such as Rummy-O, Rumi Blok, and Rummy chip. Irrespective of the type of game, an average number of four to five people can play the game at every given time.

During the playing process, the tiles are kept in a sack to be released on the playing table. This thrilling game is all bout actively employing the skill of manipulation and wits to achieve success against other players. A common feature of most experienced players lies in their ability to strategically rearrange the playing tiles along the smartest legally established rules. The American version is known o be less complex than the Israeli version which makes it a preferred choice for beginners or amateur players.

When it comes to the main playing process, some believe that it has a lot to do with how a player can combine his luck with a blend of strategic thinking to achieve optimum results. Let us see what has lead to this conclusion. The safest approach to pursue in making an initial meld (the first known move of the game) is to leave a few tiles on the rack, in order to provide yourself enough latitude for greater and succesful manipulation during the playing process.

Alternatively, you can outsource three or four sets of tiles in order to avoid the uncomfortable decision of prematurely drawing from the playing pool during the early stages of the game. Should a player fail to indulge in the first move or deliberately delays it, he or she is penalized by picking up an additional tiles to add up to his or he stock of tiles.

Many mothers who choose to bottle-feed rather than breast feed are made to feel like dysfunctional mothers. It sometimes seems that the breast-is-best mantra has pervaded our society to such an extent that mothers are now more embarrassed to bottle-feed than breastfeed in public. If you bottle-feed, what can you do to combat such condemnation?

My wife and I recently went to a fashionable eatery and suffered the side glances of disapproval from the breast-is-best brigade. It抯 very trendy place, with a laissez-faire attitude, which is reflected in its designer tables and chairs spilling out onto the pavement. The clientele is middle-class, well off and educated; the sort that prides itself on living life as one sees fit. Before the birth of our first child we would come often and notice mothers’ breastfeeding their babies on the pavement. Little did we know that we would be made to feel like pariahs by merely bottle-feeding our child?

It was a Sunday and was one of our first outings as a new family. We sat down at a table and, a little later on, noticed two mothers, at two different tables, who were busy breastfeeding. When we first noticed the other mothers we felt a sort of camaraderie; a special club of new families.

Soon our child began to cry. He wanted feeding. Naturally, my wife reached for the prepared bottle of formula and placed it on the table. She then stopped and slouched back in her chair. I asked what was wrong but she refused to say. I kept pressing and she eventually told me that one of the other mothers – who were breastfeeding – had given her a rather dirty look. I told her she was imaging things and I began to feed our child. I looked about and, to my amazement, I also noticed that two women ?the one who was breastfeeding and another who had been breastfeeding earlier ?were giving me looks of disapproval.

We left soon after with my wife holding back the tears.

At first we put this down to a one-off. But sometime later my wife went to a mothers and babies group. The idea of these groups is for mothers to get to know other mothers and to exchange idea, tips and generally help one another. What my wife noticed was that the walls of the class were plastered with breast milk propaganda. Also, no mothers talked about bottle-feeding, what formula they used, or what was the best way prepare formula. Rather, the talked incessantly about breastfeeding, latching-on and sore nipples. My wife didn抰 get the support that the group purported to offer and left the meetings altogether.

My wife ending up feeling embarrassed about bottle-feeding in public or even talking about bottle-feeding.

It was time to fight back. After all, formula milk is a fantastic alternative to breast milk. It has many advantages of that of breast milk; no sore nipples, you can stop fretting about how much milk she抯 getting, you can eat whatever you want, you can still feed your child even when you get sick, and others in your family can feed your child.

My wife got a T-shirt printed; 態ottle-feeding and Proud?and we paid another visit to the trendy eatery. We sat down and ate a very nice meal. Later my wife placed our baby抯 bottle feeding paraphernalia on the table and then began to feed him.

I don抰 know if we got many disapproving looks; I was too busy being a proud father and husband. I love my wife and seeing her bottle feed our child, I knew why I抎 married her; she抯 strong, independent-minded and a wonderful mother to our child.

When your baby has eczema you want to stop the flare up before it begins. An old adage that holds true in this case is the saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Seeing that you are reading this page you must be ready for that ounce of prevention and that is what I am going to give you right now.

I think it is important that you know that baby eczema treatments are continually changing as new information emerges. A relatively new change in the world of eczema treatments is that the basic belief of what causes eczema has changed. It was believed that the cause of eczema had deep roots in a malfunctioning immune system. The belief is now that eczema is caused primarily by skin barrier defects. This means that your study and hunt for information will probably be ongoing for a while, but you can expect that news will be coming to you faster and faster as this new way of thinking is explored.

Stopping the flare up before it starts

When trying to contain eczema, it is important first of all that you have an idea of what causes your baby’s eczema to flare. Is the eczema atopic, or is it allergy based. If it is atopic then the first thing you will want to do is treat your environments for dust mites. If it is allergy related you will want to discover the source of the allergy.

The next thing you will want to do is to always keep his skin moist. Eczema is a disease that uses itchy skin to get its program going. De-hydration is one of the more frequent reasons why a persons’ skin might itch, and once the itching begins if not properly treated it increases in intensity, and becomes a full grown problem.

Another successful way of stopping a flare before it begins is to “pre treat” the condition. A study was conducted where the strength of an eczema medicine was reduced, and instead of waiting on a flare up to occur, the lowered dosage treatment was used twice weekly. The results were quite impressive. A portion of the group was given the medicine and another part given a placebo. The group with the medicine reported flare ups occurring once every 5 months, and the group with the placebo once every 2 weeks. This explains to us that pre treatment is a good method to use to stop an eczema flare before it begins.

I think few would disagree that one of the essentials of baby care comes in the form of love. Apart from the obvious need of sustenance to survive, love comes at the top of a baby’s needs, and that continues right through childhood into the teenage years. Most teenagers would not admit it; most young children struggle to express it; and babies cannot express it. But, children of any age need love.

Something else that is needed throughout a child’s upbringing is discipline; a sensible level of discipline from which the child will benefit throughout their adult lives. The application of discipline can seem to become more difficult as a child gets older, in direct proportion to the child’s ability to express themselves assertively. In reality, though, applying discipline to a baby can be every bit as difficult, because it is a much more subtle and less obvious process.

A teenager ignoring your 10pm curfew is a blatant discipline problem. To some, a one year old baby crying because they are being taken from their toys to have a bath and go to bed, is not even about discipline, and they may not think of it as such. They love the baby, want it to be happy and, despite knowing that the baby should sleep, feel pity and put her back with her toys.

Does a Baby Need Discipline?

Discipline with a child is usually about testing boundaries; the boundaries of what they are allowed to do and what they are not allowed to do. If they do not like the answer, they protest and test again; and again. If the boundary they are trying to break gives way easily, it encourages them to go back and do it again.

If the boundary holds firm, with a consistent parent being calmly unbending, then the baby or infant will give up…..eventually. Patience and consistency are vital to the discipline, otherwise the baby will become confused; they will not learn what is acceptable and what is not, if one day you give into their protests, and on another day you do not.

In the example above, the baby has successfully used tears to get their way against the parent’s better judgement. Bath and bed time have been delayed, with a two fold result. Firstly, she will not sleep at the time that is best for her, and she will become crotchety and over tired, and cry even louder with the next attempt to put her to bed. Secondly, her success at preventing the bath will bolster her for next time; she has learnt that yelling will get her own way.

About a decade ago, while I still lived in the UK, there was a study into teenagers, to find out what it was they most needed to make their lives happier and better. More than half said they really wanted more discipline; yes, “wanted”.

Discipline has been allowed to evaporate across some Western societies, with a result that teenagers have felt that there is an absence of necessary discipline in their lives. However, there is no need to allow your baby to become just one more in the statistics of undisciplined children.

Does a baby need discipline? In my opinion, and based on my own experience, the answer is a resounding “yes”.

Can Love and Discipline Mix?

From the perspective of a “second time around” parent, I would say that not only do love and discipline mix, they are mutually essential. Working from home, I have been able to observe our baby daughter for two years. I have also been here all the time to apply “discipline” and to provide heaps of love, affection and cuddles.

I am of the view that love is not only an essential for a happy baby, it also the parents’ most powerful weapon when it comes to discipline. How can that be? By threatening to withdraw your love if the baby is naughty?

No, there is no need to make any threats at all. The baby needs love and they adore their parents. You are, in the main, their life. As they recognize you are not happy when they do something wrong, what will discipline them in the end is their deep desire for you to be happy with them, to praise them, and to show your love for them.

If a baby’s naughtiness threatens their ideal world, by observing the negative effect on you, the baby will learn to steer things back onto a course where you are happy with them, praise them again, and show your love. They will not only say they are sorry, they will mean it, because they truly are. To that extent, discipline becomes self discipline by the baby if there is enough love in the home to make them yearn for that love more than anything else.

I am not saying disciplining any baby is easy, but with sufficient love it can be a relatively smooth process if you see things from the baby’s point of view, and understand that the baby, deep down, wants to please you more than anything else.
