Does My Child Need Therapy?

Today, it is hard to determine if you should be providing child therapy to your child. It is very difficult for parents to think that there may be a problem with their baby. After all, up until the teen years hit, they allowed you to take care of them. They told you when things were not okay. You dealt with their needs throughout their life. But, now, you need to wonder if you should be providing teen therapy for them. To really know if your child needs help, ask yourself these questions.

What has changed about my child that has me concerned? If you are worried about their physical health, there is no doubt that you would recommend that they work with a doctor, right? So, if it is their emotional health that may be a problem, you need to get them the teen therapy they need.
Does your child have problems with eating, socializing or does he have behavior problems at school? Acting out in any of these areas is not normal. If your child is having problems, especially at school, child therapy can help.

Do you know that your child is drinking, doing drugs, engaging in sex, or is depressed? If you know this is the case, there is no doubt you need to get them into teen therapy before these circumstances ruin their lives. If you know about it, then it has probably gotten far out of hand.
Do you want them to have the best ability to make the right choices? Even if you do not feel your child has any problems, teen therapy can help to encourage things to stay that way.

Child therapy can be a blessing for a child. Even if they hate it and do not want to go, it can help them to realize that you care about their well being. It will help them to know what to do and how to react in their lives. Hearing from another adult what is right or wrong helps to strengthen their understanding and their belief in you. Teen therapy should not be a punishment then, but a way to get your child to safety.

Top 3 Benefits of Using Cloth Diapers on Your Baby

The Benefits of Cloth Diapers

The cloth diaper has evolved over the last few decades. There have been many changes in the cloth diaper that have made them just as easy to use and practical as a disposable diaper. Using cloth on your baby has great benefits compared to using more modern disposable diapers.

1. Physical Benefits

One of the benefits of CDing is they are healthier for your baby. Disposable diapers manufactured today are made with chemicals and materials that have been linked to different physical problems such as asthma. Cloth also reduce the risk of diaper rash because there is a lack of proper air flow in disposable diapers and babies stay in wet disposable diapers longer than they would cotton diapers. It has also been shown that some children will have allergic reactions to disposable diapers due to the chemicals used to mask odor.

2. Environmental Benefits

The environment also benefits from the use of cloth diaper. This is because a CD is going to be reused. The average lifespan of a quality CD is approximately 80 – 100 washes.

Did you know that an estimated 10,00 tons of disposable diapers enter landfills each day! A disposable diaper can take almost 500 years to decompose. Talk about taking up a lot of space! Did you also know the over 80% of American households use disposable diapers. Another benefit of cloth baby diapers is they can be saved for the next child, even be resold, or just used as rags after their lifespan has run out.

3. Cost Benefits

Overall cost is another one of the benefits of cloth baby diapers. Cloth baby diapers are expensive initially, but in the long run save you a lot of money. The average child goes through 8,000 diaper changes before being potty-trained; at 25 cents a diaper, that adds up to $2,000. So the money you invest in cloth saves you quite a bit in the long run, particularly if you plan on using cloth for two or more children.

Studies have been done comparing all the costs associated with using a cloth diaper like: diaper cost, energy costs, etc. With all these factors taking into consideration, cloth is still an economical way to cover your babies bottom.

Legacy Living Starts Tonight!

One of the advantages of having older children and a much-much younger one is that I have different sets of parent-friends. And the way we raised or managed kids 20 years ago has certainly changed from today. What I find about parents with small children today is that they almost see their children as a maintenance issue. It’s all they can do to pick them up from daycare, rush home, feed their faces, wash their bodies, throw them in bed and start the process all over the next day. I actually know parents who tuck their children into bed with a movie on their DVD in the bedroom.

We can take advantage of the little time that we do have and get a big return on that investment at the end of every day. How do we do that? Create Bedtime Rituals….Leave a Legacy – End each night with a human connection. In other words…”tuck ‘em in!”

Most people think they don’t have the time to tuck kids properly in – but if you’ll get an egg timer you’ll see it’s a minimum of a few minutes to a maximum of 15 and the results can last a lifetime. I often wish my money would bring those types of legacy returns…don’t you?

It doesn’t mean that it has to be that same old bedtime story either. Here are four suggestions.

When Sara was just 2 years old, she started “filling in the blanks” of bedtime stories I would tell. This gave me an opportunity to know more about what she thought and it also reinforced the information she needed to know for self preservation.

For example: Once upon a time, there was a beautiful little girl named _____ and she lived at ____ and her Mommy’s and Daddy’s names were ____. Her phone number was ____ and Sara had ____ brothers and ____ sisters. She also had a cat named ____ and a dog named ____. Today Sara did enjoyed this ____. Her favorite color is ____ because ____. You can see this story can be as long or as short as you’d like it…and it’s always revealing!

Another example comes from my brother Joe. His son Joseph has never had alligators under his bed or monsters in his closet. His father would close each night kneeling by his bed and asking him this question…”What did you like about today?”

And my friend Suzanne told me she was raised by older parents and she felt that she had a special outlook on life because of it. “My father was retired when I was born and stayed at home and raised me while my mother worked. Every night my father would tuck me in with one simple question…’Sweet Suzanne, what did you learn today?’ I’d read the encyclopedia and dictionary like regular books because I knew every night I would be asked that question.” She continued “My dad’s been gone for several years now, and tonight when I go to bed I will close my night by asking, Suzanne what did you learn today?” Isn’t that an incredible legacy to leave with just one simple question?

Tonight when you go to bed – tuck someone in. When was the last time you talked with your parents, a friend you valued but haven’t told in a long time? By ending each night with a human connection, it will not only balance your life, it will Leave a Legacy!

5 Cheap & Easy Costumes To Create Using a Black Dress

Always wanted to make your own costume? Do you see yourself as slightly creative but sewing is not your thing, like to save a $1.00 or $2.00, then this is the article for you. We will discuss 5 ways to adapt that little black dress, simply, by using a hot glue gun. All it takes is a little spare time, imagination &
a sense of fun.

Don’t despair if you don’t own a black dress, you can always check out your local thrift or opportunity shop. Depending on the character chosen, look for a style which is simple and plain in design and sits either above the knee or ?way up the thigh. We will describe in detail what style of dress is needed and keep in mind none are floor length.

You will have a gamut of characters to choose from for example; a Gangster girl, French maid, Flapper, Firefighter & Dracula’s vixen all of which you can wear to your next costume party.

Costume Idea 1: Gangster girls are generally known for their pinstripe ensembles, however here we will be using a sleeveless black dress and adding the accessories to complete the costume.

What you will need: black dress, black or white hat with contrasting band, short white tie, white beads, black fishnets, stilettos & tommy gun (optional).

Dress alterations: use either an A line or straight V neck dress (with sleeves or sleeveless is fine) and add a white collar (if you are handy, from an old shirt) or just keep the neckline as is.

Costume Idea 2: French maids are generally considered very feminine with their frilly dresses & high heeled stilettos.

What you will need: black dress, small frilly apron, lace headpiece, black fishnets, stilettos & feather duster (optional).

Dress alterations: use a V or round neck dress with sleeves, add gathered lace around neckline, sleeves and hemline by gluing or sewing.

Costume Idea 3: Charleston flappers were ladies from the 20s era, along with
Gangster’s moles who were known to titillate many of the mobsters by sometimes singing & flaunting their sex appeal in clubs and the like. Both wore similar style dresses adorned with tassels & accessorized with beads & boas.

What you will need: black dress, charleston feather headpiece, feather boa, loads of contrasting beads, black fishnets & stilettos.

Dress alterations: use sleeveless black dress; add 3 layers of contrast fringing. Start the 1st row along hemline, measure between each layer making them equal distance apart.

Tip: Try matching your headpiece, boa & beads to your fringing. This will make your dress really stand out in the crowd.

Costume Idea 4: Firefighters are the people who rescue property & lives and the field is traditionally male orientated. They have the persona of being very masculine and can be the envy of any girl. Here we have put a twist on things and have created a sexy female firefighter, which will get many a males heartbeat racing.

What you will need: black dress, red plastic helmet, black or red fishnet tights, black or red boots & wide red belt.

Dress alterations: use a straight black V neck dress with sleeves. To create bands for the sleeves of the dress simply cut out 2 strips each of 13mm wide fluorescent yellow & fire engine red vinyl (plastic) fabric, available at most haberdashery stores. Sew or glue 1st row of red fabric along each sleeve edge. Measure & glue 2nd row of yellow fabric approximately 10mm apart, repeat with 2nd sleeve. You could also try cutting & gluing 2 extra strips (same colours & width as discussed above) and attach to the neckline. Measure and keep the same distance apart or simply keep the neckline plain.

Costume Idea 5: Dracula’s vixen conjures up the image of seductiveness, darkness & mystique; however with this costume we have added a hint of sexiness.

What you will need: black dress, bat or gothic style choker, black fishnets, black boots, long black wig with white stripe, fangs, blood & puncture marks – tattoos for neck (optional).

Dress alterations: use a black round or V neck black long sleeve short dress, cut the hemline and sleeves jaggedly.

Tip: Be careful not to alter the length too much, as you don’t want it shorter.

By using any of these designs you will surely be the hit of the party, so why not give it a go and you will have a costume to keep which can be used over & over again.

How to Host a Memorable Baby Shower

Hosting a baby shower is a responsibility and honor, especially if it is for a first time mother. Traditionally, a close friend (or group of friends) are chosen to host a baby shower. However, today it is often very acceptable for family members to help host a baby shower. If you are not sure who should host the shower, ask the mom to be and close family members what they think. The main focus should be not on what is most “proper,” rather everyone should be focused on making this celebration enjoyable and memorable for the mom to be. If you are the one hosting the baby shower, be sure to be thoughtful in all of your party planning decisions, keeping in mind what they soon to be mom would enjoy most and let that guide your party decisions.

When inviting guests to the shower, be sure to ask the mom to be for her guest list. The number of guest invited will depend on your party location, budget, and the guest of honor’s wishes. Usually, the mom and dad’s immediate family are invited, next to close friends, and then whoever else the mom wishes to invite. Be sure to begin planning well ahead of time in order to get the details established and the invites sent out. Baby showers are typically hostess in the mom’s seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. Also, consider asking the mom if she would prefer a women only shower or if she would like dad to be included. Baby showers are no longer exclusive for women, and some couples choose to have a coed baby shower. If the decision is for a coed shower, keep in mind that this will be more like a party or celebration than a typical baby shower. Men don’t usually enjoy participating in your typical baby shower game or watching mom to be open endless boxes of baby clothes and bonnets. Making a separate area for the men to gather (like a patio or living room) to make them feel more comfortable.

The activities and theme of the baby shower should be solely inspired by the mom to be. Asking her what type of shower she would enjoy would be the easiest way to get started planning. Perhaps she would enjoy a large shower with rubber ducky decor, or perhaps she is more of a tea party and intimate gathering kind of person. Also, games can be fun way to get the guests involved in the shower and get to know one another; however it is not a mandatory to play games at a baby shower. If you do decide to play games, make sure to put some thought into them, which will make them more engaging than your typical baby bingo.

The menu at most baby showers is small. Most often, a large meal is not served at a baby shower, however this depending on your type of shower (whether it be coed, large or small). For most baby showers, serving small appetizers and finger foods is perfectly suitable. If you are having a coed shower, a barbeque might be appropriate. And if it is a small gathering like a luncheon or tea, you might want to serve a bit fancier food like exotic salads and warm appetizers. For beverages, serve a variety of tea, water, and lemonade so there is something for everyone. If fitting for your event, serving champagne might also be appropriate, though none for the mom to be. Asking her what she would enjoy as a beverage ahead of time would be a nice gesture since her options are more limited than others attending.

Need Parenting Help?

Taking help as a parent does not mean you are a failure. Help can refer to advice, tips, tricks and parenting ideas. The most helpful of all parenting ideas are those that are easy to implement and quick to work.

Drop to Their Level

When speaking to your child, it is best to drop your eye contact to their eye level. This will often mean squatting down close to the floor before beginning to speak to your child. This lowering may seem like a small change, but to a child, a towering adult can be overpowering and scary. When the eye contact is lowered, the child will tend to listen more in depth to the words the parent is speaking.

Drop the Level of Your Voice

Have you ever noticed that the children in your home listen more intently when dad tells them what to do? This may have less to do with parenting technique and more to do with the tone of the voice. When a child hears a lower tone or a deeper tone, they often link this tone with discipline. Moms can lower their tone in order to take advantage of this instinct.

Drop the Need to Yell

Yelling is often a reaction to fright. When a parent is immediately placed into a situation where they fear for the safety of their child, yelling is the immediate reaction. While yelling may seem like the best way to capture the attention of your child, children have the keen ability to ignore a raised voice or freeze at the sound of a raised voice.

Instead of yelling for or at a child, the better choice is to approach the child, remove the threat and lower your body to their level.

Parenting is more a job than a talent. Great parents have just as many questions as parents who are just beginning. These questions can be answered with a few tips, tricks and parenting ideas.

Keeping The Kids Busy When It抯 Miserably Hot

Summer is a great time for children. School is out for most of them and it抯 time to play. Running, climbing, building sand castles, swimming…

Sweating, sunburns, complaining.

It isn抰 necessarily all that easy to keep the kids busy all summer long, especially on particularly hot days, the days when the kids come into the house five minutes after you send them out, complaining 搃t抯 too hot outside!?What can you do to keep them busy, short of turning the AC on full blast, driving up your electrical bill and letting them watch television or play video games all day? Plenty!

First of all, have some cheap, cool treats on hand. Otter Pops or homemade popsicles don抰 cost much, and you just have to enforce the rule that they are eaten outside to limit the mess. These may only keep the kids out for a short time or they might find something fun to do outside anyhow.

Try getting the kids outside to play in the earlier and later parts of the day, when it抯 cooler outside. Then you won抰 feel so bad if they抮e watching television in the hottest part of the day. Try to keep television watching/video game playing under two hours a day total.

Have fun things ready for them to do indoors. Board games work very well, depending on the ages of your kids. My daughter loves doing 損rojects,?that is, arts and crafts. She has a box of supplies she can use, or we look at our copy of Little Kid Crafts for All Seasons to get ideas.

Many parents choose to enroll their kids in activities for the summer. This is good if not taken to extremes – kids need time to just be kids. My daughter is taking swimming lessons for two different sessions this summer, as well as a one day a week drama class. The drama class suits her style (it starts next week), so I expect she will enjoy it, yet it won抰 take much out of her summer fun. The swimming lessons are a necessity since she has regular access to a pool at her grandparents?house.

Of course, just because the kids are complaining that it抯 too hot outside doesn抰 mean you have to give in and let them play inside. If you have a yard, get those kids into swimsuits and sunscreen (if they aren抰 wearing it already) and turn on those sprinklers. You know you loved running through the sprinkler as a kid. You don抰 even need to buy the ones designed for kids to play with, jut make sure yours is fairly kid friendly – low to the ground, no sharp edges and so forth.

Ride bicycles, go hiking, get some of their friends to come over to play one sort of tag or another, all the stuff you enjoyed as a kid. In many cases it isn抰 that it抯 too hot to play outside, it抯 that your kids are bored.

Starting With Organic Vegetable and Herbal Gardening

It can seem daunting to begin with an organic vegetable or herbal garden for the first time, but there are few better ways to be good to the planet while also being good to yourself and enjoying yourself.

If you already eat some organic herbs and vegetables, you will surely appreciate the better taste, the health benefits and also the lack of harmful residual substances. Imagine how great it would be if you had an organic garden that would furnish you wit a plentiful supply!

Te first thing that you should do, as it will take a little while for this to be ready, is to separate your kitchen waste from the rest and build a compost heap. This can also be done indoors. Compost will prove a great boon as it is the best natural fertilizer for an organic garden and its vegetables and herbs.

Besides eliminating the need for fertilizer, compost retains moisture and therefore allows you to use less water on your organic garden. You can put all kind of kitchen refuse and garden cuttings on your compost heap, just make sure to avoid big quantities of meat or fish, and don’t add human or pet dung! These are too acidic and also the wrong kind of bacteria.

The second step will be to get organic seeds so that you can start to grow vegetable and herbs in your organic garden. Don’t take any seeds, the vast majority are industrially and not organically grown.

There probably are specialized shops that sell organic seeds for gardening in your area, but you can also buy them through an online shop and have them mailed to you. Online is probably better for most users, as you get the convenience of choosing from home from a bigger catalogue, and as for all mailed products you can return organic gardening supplies if they are not up to your expectation.

Once you have the organic seeds, don’t plant them outdoors right away but let them sprout inside the house, using organic soil in small pots. There isn’t much that can go wrong at this stage, but avoid giving your seedlings them too much water or they will drown.

Once the first leaves are showing, put them into individual pots as a preparation to outdoor planting in your organic garden. There are some fine composting pots that you can use, plant them in the ground together with your seedling and let them act as extra natural fertilizer for your organic garden.

Now that you have compost and grown seedlings, you will also need good organic soil. This earth is much better as it acts as a natural pest controller, and will let your plants grow more vigorous. If you had a on-organic garden or flower bed where your organic garden is going to be planted, we recommend removing and substituting a layer of old soil altogether.

Once you have some good compost, spread it over your soil. The layer should be about two inches thick. If done correctly, the compost alone will contribute all the necessary nutrients and minerals that your organic vegetable and herbal garden needs to grow and flourish.
